What are Nursing and Residential Care Facilities?

A nursing home provides a type of residential care as they are places of residence for people who require constant nursing care and have significant deficiencies with activities of daily living. Nursing aides and skilled nurses are usually available 24 hours a day. Residents include the elderly and younger adults with physical or mental disabilities. Residents in a skilled nursing facility may also receive physical, occupational, and other rehabilitative therapies following an accident or illness. Some nursing homes assist people with special needs, such as Alzheimer patients.

This industry comprises establishments primarily engaged in providing inpatient nursing and rehabilitative services. The care is generally provided for an extended period of time to individuals requiring nursing care. These establishments have a permanent core staff of registered or licensed practical nurses that, along with other staff, provide nursing and continuous personal care services. This industry provides living quarters, inpatient nursing, and rehabilitation services for people with a chronic illness or disability. The care is usually provided for an extended period to individuals who require help with day-to-day activities, but who do not need to be in a hospital.

Urgent Care Centers:

This industry includes facilities that deliver medical care on an unscheduled, walk-in basis. Urgent care centers are primarily used to treat patients who have an injury or illness that requires immediate care but is not serious enough to warrant emergency room care.

Mental health and residential developmental handicap facilities:

This industry comprises establishments (e.g., group homes, hospitals, intermediate care facilities) primarily engaged in providing residential care services for persons diagnosed with mental retardation. These facilities may provide some health care, though the focus is room, board, protective supervision, and counseling.

In-Home Senior Care:

This industry provides in-home healthcare services to people aged 65 and older. Services may include skilled nursing care, homemaker and companion services, physical therapy, and medical social services.

Community care facilities for the elderly:

This industry comprises establishments primarily engaged in providing residential and personal care services for the elderly and other persons who are unable to fully care for themselves and/or the elderly and other persons who do not desire to live independently. The care typically includes room, board, supervision, and assistance in daily living, such as housekeeping services. In some instances, these establishments provide skilled nursing care for residents in separate on-site facilities.

Other residential care facilities:

This industry comprises establishments primarily engaged in providing residential care (except residential mental retardation facilities, residential health and substance abuse facilities, continuing care retirement communities, and homes for the elderly). These establishments also provide supervision and personal care services.
