What is Elderly Care?

Elderly care, or eldercare, or aged care, is the fulfillment of the special needs and requirements that are unique to senior citizens. This broad term encompasses such services as assisted living, adult daycare, long term care, nursing homes, hospice care, and home care.

What is Home Health Care?

Home health care is the primary aspect of the senior care industry. This can involve either medical care or non-medical care or some combination. Medical care provides a variety of medical services for patients, with some of the most common being private nursing, administering antibiotics, and assisting in rehabilitation. Heart disease, diabetes, and cerebral vascular disease are the most common ailments resulting in in-home care, and about seventy percent of in-home patients are 65 or older.

Non-medical assistance includes aides helping seniors with chores, preparing meals, taking medication, helping with bathing, and general companionship. As seniors age, non-medical care is often a step between self-sufficiency and family care and more serious medical care.

Types of Home Health Care:

There are several basic levels of home care to choose from:

  • Personal care attendants providing assistance with activities of daily living
  • Private duty care providing assistance with non-medical needs such as shopping
  • Licensed Class B home care agencies employing home health aides to serve ambulatory and medically stable clients
  • Licensed Class A home care agencies serving seniors, who are non-ambulatory, require help taking medications or need diabetic monitoring, wound care, and other hands-on skilled care
  • Medicare-certified skilled home care is typically received on an acute, intermittent basis following an illness, injury, or change in disease status.

What is the In-Home Senior Care Industry?
